Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral used as insulation in the construction and manufacturing industries. Though it has been known for nearly a century that asbestos exposure poses a great health hazard, the United States Environmental Protection Agency didn’t ban it until 1989. Today, man made products are used in its place, but old construction still exists with asbestos-based insulation. It is very possible to be exposed to asbestos today in TN workplaces or old homes.
The U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has set regulations for worker exposure to asbestos, but safety equipment and time limits for exposure are not enough to prevent the most severe asbestos-related diseases.
Asbestosis and mesothelioma are the diseases most commonly acquired after long term exposure to asbestos. There is no cure for either disease. Those who develop asbestosis in the lungs face lifelong breathing issues, oxygen therapy and increased sensitivity to other diseases. Those who develop mesothelioma, a rare and malignant form of lung cancer, face a poor prognosis. It is extremely rare that mesothelioma is found in someone who has not had direct contact with asbestos. Even family members of asbestos workers are at increased risk of developing the deadly disease up to 20 or more years after initial exposure.
