Last Friday morning, a three-decade-long employee of Astec, Inc. was involved in a disturbing and shocking accident at their Chattanooga facility. Reports show that there were also three passengers in the van and that both the driver and at least one passenger suffered minor injuries. A trial began in Knoxville last week for a horrific hit-and-run that has shattered two families and shocked several others. It began when a young woman ran out of gas and had to stop on the side of the road. She called a friend to see if she could lend a hand. Her friend, seven months pregnant, soon arrived. A man who lived close by saw the young women having difficulty and brought them enough gas to get them going again. It was a random act of kindness that would unfortunately be his last. The pregnant woman offered a hug for gratitude, and that is when the worst happened. They were struck by the drunk driver.

Three lives were lost that night – the Good Samaritan, a mother, and her unborn child. The driver sped away. He would go to great lengths to cover up his crimes, switching cars, and even considered leaving town. But police caught up to him.

He already had a DUI in his past and is facing ‘three counts of vehicular homicide, three counts of vehicular homicide by intoxication, one charge of driving under the influence, one count of tampering with evidence, one offense of reckless endangerment, one count of leaving the scene of an accident.’

The Good Samaritan leaves behind a wife and five children, and without insurance the bills have probably been overwhelming. The pregnant woman leaves behind another child, and her family is left to pay for funeral expenses, too. We hope they’ll all find the peace and justice they deserve.

A passenger van transporting twelve people entered an intersection at Standifer Gap and Hickory Valley Roads, an intersection well known for traffic accidents. A pastor at a church located at the corner said, “I’ve only been here for two years and there have been several wrecks at the corner.” The intersection lived up to its reputation when a utility van ran through a red light and smashed into the adult daycare passenger van.

The impact was enough to flip the van onto its side. Emergency crews soon arrived, but many of the van’s passengers were trapped inside the vehicle. The crews were forced to cut part of the top of the van’s roof off in order to pull the seniors inside to safety. Ultimately all twelve of the van’s passengers were transported to local hospitals, eight of which had to be taken away on stretchers.

It’s a sad reminder of how one simple lack of judgment like running a red light can have an immense impact on so many lives. Hopefully those involved in the wreck will recover quickly, so they can continue to live out their lives with the peace and dignity they deserve.

Two people were in a car driving along South White Street when they were involved in an accident. The force of the crash sent their car sliding down a steep embankment. A bad situation turned worse when the vehicle flipped over and landed upside down in Oostanuala Creek. The two accident victims found themselves trapped in a car that was partially submerged in near-freezing water – the outcome looked grim.

Fortunately, a police Sergeant quickly arrived on the scene and immediately recognized the seriousness of the situation. He rushed into the frigid water and spoke with the passenger, who was unable to get out of the car on his own. Every minute they were trapped inside the car the danger of hypothermia setting in increased. If their body temperature dropped too low, their bodies could begin to shut down causing lifelong damage or even death.

So the police officer grabbed hold of the man and literally pulled him to safety. Firefighters soon arrived and, along with the officer, they were able to rescue the driver from the car as well. They were all treated by paramedics to ensure that no one was showing signs of hypothermia. They weren’t, but it could have been a very different case if the officer hadn’t sprung into action with total selflessness.

Over the weekend a Knoxville rider lost his life on Interstate 75. Saturday afternoon the man’s motorcycle was hit from behind by a car. He lost control of his bike and fell to the ground where he was run over by the vehicle behind him – he was pronounced dead at the scene. While an investigation into the wreck continues, it seems blame is being placed on failed brakes. A father of one of the students recounted his son’s experience. “He said he noticed the odor of the brake pads burning… The Bus was getting faster and faster, in a couple of cases, he thought the bus was going to flip.”

The out-of-control bus ultimately ran over a small hill and went airborne before crashing along Signal Mountain. More than 22 people were injured in the wreck and had to be taken to local hospitals. Fortunately, none of their injuries were life-threatening. According to the president of the Kentucky Wesleyan Singers, “I’m just glad to be alive… It really showed how resilient we are.” He believes the harrowing experience has brought the already tight-knit group even closer together.
